Webcast Frequently Asked Questions

We have compiled a list of frequently asked questions pertaining to the webcast functionality offered by our website.

1. Why are there multiple media player icons on some archived webcasts?
We have recently upgraded our website to accommodate other media players such as Windows Media Player and Apple's QuickTime player. We are committed to offering our content to our users via their favorite player, but may not have all media types available soon after the live webcast. If you don't see your favorite media player listed as an option, check back again and most likely the media will be available for your favorite player.

2. Where can I download Real's Media Player?
You can download Real's Media player from the following URL: Get Real Player Now

3. Why are the live webcasts only available in Real's Media Format?
At this time, we only offer live webcasts using Real's Live Streaming Format. .

4. When I attempt to watch a webcast with Real's Media Player, the player constantly has a status of "Communicating". As a result, the webcast is choppy and is difficult to watch. Do I need to make any adjustments on my PC?
Most likely your firewall or ISP has blocked some of the TCP ports required by the webcast streaming server. If you open the standalone Real Player (via your Start Menu) and click on the "Tools" Menu item at the top, choose "Preferences", expand "Connection", choose "Network Transport" you can manually configure your network settings. In the main area of the window, you will see a section named "Network Transport". Check the "Manually Configure connection settings" and click on the "RTSP Settings" button. Uncheck all checkboxes except for the "Attempt to use HTTP for all content" checkbox. This should be checked. Click OK to exit this window and click OK to exit the first pop-up window. Close Real Player and try accessing a Pritzker Military Library's archived webcast again.

5. Where can I get the media player to view the webcasts?
You must have the Real Player installed to watch a live webcast. However, we plan on encoding all Real webcasts into QuickTime and Windows Media. You can download either of the players at the URLs below:
Real Player       QuickTime Player       Windows Media Player

6.  How can I view the webcast in the standalone player of my choice?
Above the embedded player there is a button in which you can click and view the webcast in the standalone player. The webcast in the embedded window should stop. However, this may behave differently if you have configured your player not to automatically stop. We encourage you to stop the embedded webcast by clicking on the stop button if you notice that it is still playing while you view the webcast in the standalone player.

7. What are the recommended PC requirements for viewing a webcast?
- 500 MHz Intel Pentium III processor or greater (supports simultaneous record/playback features)
- 128MB of RAM
- High-speed Internet connection (audio/video)
- Full Duplex sound card and speakers
- 65,000-color video display card set to display at 800x600 or higher (video)
- Windows 98SE, Windows ME, Windows 2000 with Service Pack 2 or later, or Windows XP
- Internet Explorer 6.0 or later
- Windows Media Player 9.0 or later
- QuickTime 6.4 or later
- Real Player 10 (Required for Live Webcasts)

8. When I watch a webcast with Real Player, the webcast video is choppy. I have a high bandwidth internet connection that is above 192 KBPS. What could be the problem?
Your video card may not have enough resources to render the video in real time. If this is the case, you can configure Real Player to use more of your core PC resources by adjusting the way the player uses your system's resources. To adjust this, you should goto the Hardware configuration panel by accessing the Tools->Preferences->Hardware menu of the Real Player. You can slide the slider bar for the "Video Card Compatibility" configuration to the middle or even further to the left. Once you have made this change save your changes, close the Real Player, restart your internet browser and access the webcast again.
