Artist Martha Sawyers was born and raised in Texas but felt herself pulled toward the South Pacific. After traveling throughout India, Indonesia, and China, she created art based on her observations. The art director from
Collier’s asked Sawyer to become the magazine’s Asia illustration expert after seeing her work in an exhibition in New York. After World War II began, she became a war correspondent for
Collier’s and made war relief posters for China, as well as this one for U.S. War Bonds.
