Artist Jes Wilhelm Schlaikjer (1897-1982) enlisted in the Army Signal Corps during World War I and served in France as Chief Receiving Operator at the Lafayette Radio Station in Paris. After the war, he attended the École Beaux-Arts in France and the Art Institute in Chicago. He settled in New York and became an artist, portraitist, illustrator, and art teacher. His illustration work appeared in magazines such as Woman’s Home Companion and Collier’s.

Painted in 1944, the original portrait from which this poster was created features U.S. Army Air Forces Captain Thomas Wakeman Jr. During World War II Capt. Wakeman flew B-26 Marauder airplanes in the European Theater. After the war, Capt. Wakeman remained in the reserves until 1949. The original portrait currently hangs at the U.S. Air Force Band Headquarters building.
