As a prolific American artist and illustrator, James Montgomery Flagg’s work was featured in Collier’s, Cosmopolitan, Hearst’s International, Judge, Liberty, Life, McClure’s, Photoplay, Redbook, Saturday Evening Post, The American Weekly, Women’s Home Companion,
and many other magazines. During World War I Flagg created 46 posters for the U.S. government. Flagg’s most recognized work, however, is his iconic 1917 depiction of Uncle Sam. This poster is representative of the popular international theme of having the subject point and look directly at the viewer, encouraging them to act.
