Committing to Courage: The Medal of Honor

September 8 - October 9, 2006

The Medal of Honor is America's highest award for valor in combat. Most are given posthumously; today, there are less than 100 living recipients from service in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. The Pritzker Military Library is proud to be a part of the 2009 Medal of Honor Convention, which will take place in Chicago from September 15-19, 2009.

This exhibit features items from the collection of the Pritzker Military Library that illuminate the history of the Medal of Honor, along with the powerful photography of Nick Del Calzo. In 1999, inspired by the memory of his three older brothers and their service in World War II, Del Calzo embarked on what he describes as "a photographic quest to honor the millions of veterans whose lives, interrupted by war, changed history - the country's and their own." Over the next several years, he set out to photograph every living recipient of the Medal of Honor. Del Calzo's portraits accompany each profile in Medal of Honor: Portraits of Valor Beyond the Call of Duty, which is published by the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation.
